The Big Question 82: Is It True That Jesus Is The Only Way To God?

Radio Version:

Is it true that Jesus is the only way to God?

Let me answer this question like this: if what Jesus says is true, then he is.

I know that’s not necessarily a popular thing to say in a pluralistic society in which the popular thing to say is that whatever you believe to be true is true for you, but let’s look at it.

Some people who consider themselves to be spiritual to say that Jesus was sent by God and that indeed he was a way to God, among many other ways to God.

There’s a big problem with this. And that is that that isn’t what Jesus claimed about himself. He was quite specific. He said,

I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

He said that many times, and in many ways, that he was the only way to God. His many claims about himself were absolutely exclusive.

So, if you then turn around and say that Jesus was only one way to God, among many others, are you calling him a liar? Or stupid?

You see, you can’t say that and then think at the same time that Jesus still has any kind of moral authority.

So, based on his own claims, either Jesus is the only way to God or he is nothing at all.

I know that there’s a temptation in our modern society for believers to surrender the idea that Jesus is the only way to God, and to think that there might be other ways.

Now, I’m not saying that anyone is saved by belonging to the same group, or believing exactly the same things.

You can never put any limits on the love and mercy of God, and on his ability to save. So, I’m sure that we’ll be in for a lot of surprises when we get to heaven. And on the other hand, I can tell you this: everyone who is there will only be there because of Jesus and what he accomplished at the Cross.

In our pluralistic society today it’s common to accuse Christians who say that Jesus is the only way to God as being arrogant. But think about it. It could only be arrogant if it wasn’t true. If it’s a fact, it’s not arrogant to say it.

The reality is that the way this is presented in the Bible, to believe that Jesus is the only way to salvation isn’t a cause for arrogance, but instead a cause for a more humble attitude towards others. Because there is no other way to be saved, other than to trust in Jesus. We can’t do it ourselves. And everyone is saved the same way. And the other thing is that it doesn’t mean that we know everything. But we do know that Jesus is the only way to God.
