What Does Jesus Call Us To Do?

does jesus call us

Does Jesus call us? Firstly – Jesus calls us first to accept his gift of salvation, for everything else flows from this. When we receive salvation, Jesus gives us his Holy Spirit as our constant companion. This is how we become Jesus’ active followers and demonstrate all the ‘fruits of the Spirit’: “love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23).

The Apostle Paul describes this process in his letter to the Colossians:

“Therefore, just as you have received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, established in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

Colossians 2:6-7

Jesus calls, and God wants us to obey Him out of love and trust, not as a way to earn his approval, but out of love and gratitude because his laws are a recipe for a happy, fulfilled life.

Does Jesus Call Us to Love?

Just as God is Love, so love must also be a defining characteristic of the Christian. When Jesus was teaching, one of the experts in the law engaged him, asking him what he needed to do to inherit eternal life. Jesus asked him what the Law of Moses said. The man replied, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and love your neighbour as yourself” (Luke 10:27, 28).

Jesus told him, “You have answered correctly. Do this, and you will live.”

Paul added more detail: “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.  And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.  And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body.  And be thankful” (Colossians 3:12-15).

Does Jesus Call us? Jesus wants you to come to him, to bring your mind to his truth and accept it, as given to you in his Word, the Bible. Then he will live in you through the Holy Spirit, and he will lead you into a new life of service – to God and other people. Our primary duty as Christians who have received salvation through Jesus is to reflect God’s love to others. “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another” (John 13:34 NIV).

Does Jesus call us? Does Jesus call me? Does Jesus call you? YES! YES! YES!

The outcome of this love is to live selfless, giving lives of generosity. In doing this, we will be playing our part in fulfilling the Great Gospel Commission, which Jesus gave to his disciples:

“…go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you”.

Matthew 28:18-20

This, if anything, is an answer to those asking, “What Does Jesus Call us to do?”!
