Verse of the Day Romans 5 1 with Dave Miers

Romans 5:1

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. (ESV)

What an extraordinary sentence from Romans! Two massive things given to us in Jesus. Justification and peace.

Now, justification is a big deal. He begins with the word “therefore” because he’s just actually unpacked this idea of justification for the first four chapters of Romans. And justification is all about a declaration of not guilty, in fact righteous, in the courtroom of God.

Incredibly, this is what has been on offer in those opening chapters of the book of Romans — that before God, even though you’ve broken his holy law, you can not only be forgiven, but you can have the perfect record of Jesus credited to you.

It’s extraordinary! It’s by faith. Simply by trusting in who Jesus is — the one who lived the perfect life, died a sacrificial death, and rose again.

But not only do we have justification, and this is kind of a transition moment in the book of Romans, we also have peace. And peace is, “Hey, you’re not just right with God in a courtroom. You are relationally now right with God. You are no longer a hostile enemy. You are reconciled, restored back with him.”

And Jesus is the one that has brokered that deal. He has brought about peace. He himself is our peace. And the chapters that follow unpack something of that peace with God, so much so by Romans 8, we can call God Father.

Like that’s how incredible the forgiveness and the peace that Jesus has brought in! We’re not only acquitted in the courtroom, but we’re welcome in the family home, calling God our Father.

Take hold of these incredible truths of what Jesus offers to all!
