Frank Sinatra sang “My Way.” But is that the best way?

Proverbs 3:7

[7] Be not wise in your own eyes;

fear the LORD, and turn away from evil. (ESV)

the best way good news for today

This verse contrasts two ways of living: being wise in our own eyes or fearing the LORD.

Being wise in our own eyes means trusting our own read on things more than God’s word. It’s effectively saying:

I know what’s best.

I’ve got this.

I’ll do it my way.

The verse says that’s exactly backwards. A few verses earlier, we see that the wise person doesn’t lean on their own understanding. They fear the LORD, and that shows up in what they do: they turn away from evil.

To fear the LORD is to recognise that:

He is God, and we are not.

He is the Creator, and we are his creatures.

The reality is that we don’t always live wisely; we are prone to embrace evil rather than shun it.

The good news is… Jesus perfectly lived the wisdom we keep failing at.

He delighted in the fear of the LORD. He always did what pleased his Father. And he went to the cross to save people like us, who keep insisting on our own way.

Jesus isn’t just our example of wisdom. He is our wisdom and our salvation.

So as followers of Jesus, we can stop humming “my way” and follow the one who is THE Way.

Like and share so others can see Jesus clearly.
