Hebrews 10:19–22

[19] Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, [20] by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, [21] and since we have a great priest over the house of God, [22] let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. (ESV)

The Way Is Open

“Therefore.” That’s how this passage begins – pointing back to everything Hebrews has been saying about Jesus, our great high priest.

We have confidence. Not confidence in ourselves, but confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus.

In the Old Testament, the high priest could only enter the Most Holy Place once a year. And even then, he had to bring animal blood to make atonement. It was dangerous. Restricted. It reminded everyone that sin is serious and we can’t approach God on our own terms.

But Jesus has changed everything. By his blood – his once-for-all sacrifice – he’s opened the way. Verse 20 says, “by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh.”

Remember what happened when Jesus died? The curtain in the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The barrier between unholy people and a holy God was removed. Not by us. By Jesus. Through his torn flesh and shed blood.

The way is open.

Full Assurance of Faith

So what’s our response? Verse 22: “Let us draw near.”

This is the first of three “let us” statements in this passage. It’s the call to faith. Let us trust in Jesus. Let us approach God with confidence because of what Christ has done.

Notice the language, we draw near “with a true heart in full assurance of faith.”

Full assurance. We don’t approach God hoping we’ve done enough. We don’t come nervously, wondering if maybe today he’ll accept us. We come with confidence – not because we’re great, but because Jesus is.

Our hearts have been “sprinkled clean from an evil conscience.” Our bodies have been “washed with pure water.” These point to our conversion – when we first trusted Jesus, when the gospel cleansed us. That’s the reality we stand in now.

You don’t earn this confidence. You receive it through faith in Jesus.

Living From Faith, Not For It

If you’re a Christian, you draw near to God every day. You pray. You open your Bible. You meet with other followers of Jesus.

But why?

Are you doing those things to earn God’s acceptance? Hoping that if you pray enough, read enough, attend enough, God will be pleased with you?

That’s exhausting. And it’s not the gospel.

The gospel says you’re already accepted. Through Jesus, you’re already clean. You already have confidence to enter God’s presence. So you don’t draw near to become acceptable. You draw near because you already are.

We live from faith, not for it.

Prayer isn’t a transaction. Bible reading isn’t a box to tick. Church isn’t a place to prove yourself. These are means of grace – ways God meets with you, strengthens you, and reminds you of what’s already true in Christ.

The Good News Is…

The good news is that Jesus has opened the way. Through his blood, through his torn flesh, the barrier is gone. You can draw near with confidence. Not someday, but today.

If you’re not yet a believer, this is an invitation. Jesus has done everything necessary to bring you back to God. The door is open. Draw near. Trust in him.

If you’re already a Christian, keep drawing near. Don’t drift. Come to God daily with full assurance, knowing that in Christ, you are fully and forever accepted.

We are a community of faith.

Reflection

Heavenly Father, thank you that through Jesus’ blood, the way is open. Help me to draw near to you today with full assurance – not because of what I’ve done, but because of what Jesus has done. Teach me to live from faith, not for it. In his name, Amen.
