“If we say, ‘We’ll go into the city—the famine is there, and we will die. And if we stay here, we will die. So let’s go over to the camp of the Arameans and surrender. If they spare us we live; if they kill us, then we die’” (2 Kings 7:4).
“Freedom’s just another word for ‘nothin’ left to lose.” There’s more truth in Kris Kristofferson’s lyric than he may have thought. Four Samarian lepers came to the same conclusion. The city was besieged, the people were starving. Lepers were the least likely to be given any bread. Outside the city, death lurked in the form of the Aramean army. To be faced with the certainty that on every possible route away from one’s present distress, absolute loss awaits, is, to sit on the cusp of freedom. True, the liberation might be realized in death and oblivion. Alternatively, it could be life as Christ offers it abundant and joyful.
