Shut Down The Voice of the Inner Critic – by Bilyana de Soto

No doubt you are aware of those inner nagging thoughts and doubts that can be so self-condemning and so self-judgemental. This inner critical voice sits as both judge and jury in our innermost soul and reminds us of our failures, of our shortcomings and of our inadequacies.
At times it even sounds righteous, because it speaks of how failures are bad, and how we need to lift our game in order to be acceptable in God’s eyes. It robs us of our peace undermines our confidence in salvation found in Jesus only, and apart from any performance on my part.
Who is orchestrating this self-destructive inner dialogue? Who is speaking these accusing words of condemnation? Is it God? There is an accuser in our midst, but it is not God who condemns.
This accusing spirit always points to the problem, and its primary aim is to discredit the work of Christ in or lives. Yes we fail but Jesus forgave.
This hostile spirit keeps pointing to the shortcomings as if Jesus did nothing to erase them. This is an anti-Christ spirit, working through the legalistic voice of condemnation. Its intent is to tear down and destroy your confidence in Jesus and in His full and free salvation accomplished on your behalf.
Listen to what Apostle Paul has to say in Romans:
Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. Romans 8:1,2
God’s word teaches us that we need to tune in to a “better word”. Listen to Hebrews 12:24:
You have come…to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.
In Jesus we are offered a new inner dialogue, a better word, a renewing of the mind. In Jesus we have the privilege of seeing ourselves as Jesus sees us.
In her book, Knowing Who I am in Christ, Joyce Meyer gives an extensive look into who we are in Christ:
- I am holy and without blame before Him in love (Ephesians 1:4;1 Peter 1:16).
- I have the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16;Philippians 2:5).
- I have the peace of God that passes all understanding (Philippians 4:7).
- I have received the gift of righteousness and reign as a king in life by Jesus Christ. (Romans 5:17)
