Unlimited: The Embodiment of Knowledge and Truth

if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark, 20 an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of little children, because you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth (Rom. 2:19–20.)

Because the Jewish people saw the law as “the embodiment of knowledge and truth,” they saw themselves as far superior to others. They were the ones who could see, who could lead the blind. They walked in light and could guide those who walked in darkness. They were the wise who could instruct the foolish. They were the adults who could teach the others, who were little children.

Jesus similarly emphasised the folly of their religion gone wrong. For example, Jesus called the Jewish religious leaders “blind guides leading the blind” (Matt. 15:14, NLT.)

Jesus himself is the embodiment of knowledge and truth.

This was all because they saw in the law the “embodiment of knowledge and truth.” Paul is pointing this out because he knows that Jesus had announced himself with the words.

…I am the way and the truth… (John 14:6, NIV.)

John wrote that Jesus was the one who was, in the flesh, the embodiment of truth:

And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us…. full of grace and truth (John 1:14, NKJV.)

When we remember that it is Jesus himself who is the embodiment of knowledge and truth, we will be protected against the danger of excessive pride in our particular church or religious community, or in the law or any other kind of religious knowledge.

Spiritual Application

In your spiritual walk, in what ways are you a teacher? In what ways are you a learner? How can you ensure that you remain humble and teachable in both roles?
