Unlimited: Evil is Right There with Me

So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me (Romans 7:21).
Even when he wants to do good, Paul says that “evil is right there with” him. The principle of sinful human nature is so ingrained in this world and in our very natures that the apostle Paul calls it a “law.” Paul is right to call this a law, because here on this earth, apart from Christ, the influence of evil is constant and pervasive.
Even when he wants to do good, Paul says that “evil is right there with” him.
When Paul says that “evil is right there with me” or “evil is present,” the world literally means to “lie beside.” The idea is that sin is crouching, waiting to ambush him. It is as God said to Cain, that,
sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it (Gen. 4:7.)
I’m sure that you know, from your own experience, that this is such an apt description of how sin works in our lives. Just when we think that we are travelling fine, sin springs up and ambushes us! No matter how far along our Christian journey we think we may be, evil is always right there with us, ready to trip us up in a moment.
This evil that is “right there with” us is the indwelling sin of our sinful human nature. There is never any place for complacency in our spiritual walk.
Have you experienced being ambushed by the evil that “is right there with” you? Reflect on that. What can you do to strengthen yourself spiritually?
