Unlimited: No Advantage

What shall we conclude then? Do we have any advantage? Not at all! For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin (Romans 3:9).

The apostle has already told us in Rom. 3:1–2 that the Jewish people have great advantages:

Much in every way! (v.2.)

However, the advantages which the Jewish people enjoyed were earthly privileges and not heavenly ones. While they had been entrusted with the truths of God through the patriarchs and the prophets, they had no advantage with regard to their natural standing before God. They had no advantage whatsoever in terms of their righteousness, and therefore their salvation.

This is why, having said that the Jews had many advantages, Paul now asks,

Do we have any advantage? Not at all!

Why? Because all, both Jews and Gentiles, are sinners and under the power of sin.

The religious, ethnic, or national group to which you belong confers no advantage when it comes to the sin problem.

With this statement Paul cuts across and demolishes all the prejudices of humanity. We are all in the same boat. All of humanity is under the power of sin since the original fall in Eden. The religious, ethnic, or national group to which you belong confers no advantage in this regard.

Because we all have the same sin problem, we all need the same solution:

For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive (1 Cor. 15:21–22).

Spiritual Application

Do you belong to a religious group? Which one? Are you proud of belonging? What advantages do you think you have? God calls us into community. That’s a good thing. But beware of spiritual pride.
