Unlimited: Our Response

What, then, shall we say in response to these things? (Romans 8:31a).

The apostle Paul has told us how we are made right with God amid the reality of our lives. Now Paul comes to the culmination of his exposition of the Gospel in his letter to the Romans. What can we possibly say in response to the magnificent salvation that God has provided? This question introduces one of the most magnificent passages in all of Scripture.

The magnificent truth of how we are made right with God, that Paul has so clearly explained in his letter, demands a response from us: we have to say something. This “saying” doesn’t merely consist of mouthing mere words. What we say must come from our hearts (Rom. 10:8–10.) In other “words”, when we have truly accepted the Good News, our response will be one that flows from our hearts. It is a response of our entire lives.

When we have truly accepted the Good News, our response will be one that flows from our hearts.

There are two parts to the message of Scripture: the first one is the Gospel, and everything else is “What, then, shall we say in response to these things?” – our response to the Gospel.

People often ask about faithfulness, good works, and obedience. Where do they fit in? The answer is that all of this is our response to the Good News that we have been accounted righteous through the blood of Jesus.

Spiritual Application

Go to a quiet place and read through one of your favourite passages of Scripture that deal with the Gospel. Spend some time in contemplation of the beauty of Christ, and let yourself be overwhelmed by what he has done for you. How will your life be different as a result?
