Unlimited: Swift to Shed Blood

Their feet are swift to shed blood; ruin and misery mark their ways (Romans 3:15–16).

Having referred to the harm that the tongue can do, the apostle Paul now turns to our feet. Here Paul isn’t literally referring to our feet. Instead, he uses feet metaphorically to refer to the choices that we choose to make and the paths we choose to take in life. That is what feet often represent in the Bible – our whole conduct. The image here is of someone running to kill someone else. Paul is quoting from Proverbs 1:

15 my son, do not go along with them,
    do not set foot on their paths;
16 for their feet rush into evil,
    they are swift to shed blood
(Prov 1:15–16; See also vv.11–12.)

What are your feet swift to do?

There are two paths which we can choose to tread. There is no third path. We can choose to walk that path that will result in ruin, misery and death, or we can choose to walk the path that brings Good News and life. We can choose the feet of death or the feet that bring good news. In chapter 10 of his epistle, Paul is later to quote the words of Isaiah 52:7:

How beautiful on the mountains
    are the feet of those who bring good news,
who proclaim peace,
    who bring good tidings,
    who proclaim salvation,
who say to Zion,
    “Your God reigns!”

Spiritual Application

Think carefully about the places to which you’ve gone in the last seven days. Have your feet rushed to bring evil, or have they rushed to bring the Good News?

The word of God does come and return void unless it accomplishes the purpose of which is sent to do. I love the word of God. It has blessed my life and my family.
