Unlimited: The Lord’s Sentence on Earth

For the Lord will carry out his sentence on earth with speed and finality (Romans 9:28.)

The apostle here is continuing to quote from Isaiah 10. These words refer to the final judgment and destruction of the wicked, as the following verse (10:29) confirms. Strikingly, the words apply to those of Israel, who will be like the sand of the sea, and who are not the remnant. Only some will be saved.

We may apply this to spiritual Israel as well. It is easy and tempting for people in the church to be lulled into a false sense of security, just as those who are not followers of Jesus. It is easy to think that Jesus’ coming and judgment isn’t on its way, in the words of the apostle Peter,

Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning… (2 Pet. 3:3–4.)

God will certainly carry out his sentence on earth with finality.

This is a good description of the “scoffers” in our own day. But Paul reminds us that God will certainly carry out his sentence on earth with finality. The prophet Isaiah describes it as,

his strange work… his alien task (Isa. 28:21.)

While the world may deny it, earth’s day of reckoning is coming.

Spiritual Application

It’s easy to be lulled into a false sense of security in this world, and to think that “everything goes on as it has since the beginning.” What can you do this week to wake yourself up to the reality that the first coming of Jesus into the world has changed everything?
