Unlimited: The Outward and Physical

A person is not a Jew who is one only outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical (Rom. 2:28.)

This fundamental statement in the Bible is important for us to understand.

God values inner and spiritual realities, much more than mere appearances and what is physical. The Lord said to Samuel,

Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Sam. 16:7.)

God values inner and spiritual realities, much more than mere appearances and what is physical.

God has always valued, above all, the condition of our hearts in relation to him. This should not have been a new revelation to Paul’s readers, nor that true circumcision was spiritual and of the heart. More than a millennia before, Moses had said to the people,

14 To the Lord your God belong the heavens, even the highest heavens, the earth and everything in it. 15 Yet the Lord set his affection on your ancestors and loved them, and he chose you, their descendants, above all the nations—as it is today. 16 Circumcise your hearts… (Deut. 10:12–17.)

God had always intended that the meaning of circumcision should not consist in the physical mark itself, but instead of distrust in the flesh and trust in God for righteousness.

Spiritual Application:

Can you think of a time when you trusted in yourself and fell short? How does that help you understand the spiritual meaning of circumcision?
