Unlimited: The Promise is through Isaac

On the contrary, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned” (Romans 9:7b).

Abraham had two sons. His firstborn, by Sarah’s maidservant Hagar, was Ishmael. His second son, by Sarah herself, was Isaac. Although Ishmael was Abraham’s genetic descent, and indeed the firstborn, he did not inherit the promise. God had instead chosen Isaac to inherit the promises made to Abraham. Correspondingly, Isaac embraced the promise, while Ishmael did not.

This must be understood in a spiritual sense. Paul is saying that it isn’t physical descent that determines who belongs to true Israel.

No matter how prominent or privileged your family may be in a worldly or religious sense, it is important to understand that God does not favour you more highly than others. How the world sees things isn’t how God sees things. God does not bless you according to your physical or religious lineage.

The promise is not by physical descent, but through faith.

Because the promise is through Isaac and not Ishmael, it means that the promise is not by physical descent, but through faith.

God makes his own choice. He loves all equally.  You become one of his chosen people the moment that you choose him. God determines who are his heirs, and it is those who embrace the promise.

No matter the disadvantage which you may have experienced, and no matter the depths of sin that you may have come from, you too can inherit the promise!

Spiritual Application

Are you relying on your worldly advantages to be accepted by God, or do you know that you are accepted through faith in Christ? Do you spiritually belong to the family of Ishmael or the family of Isaac?

I know I have sinned in many ways. But by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, I know I accepted God and He accepted me as I was. I am not so worldly advantaged but through faith in Christ, I can also inherit the Promises of God.
