Unlimited: You Belong to Another

So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God (Romans 7:4).

In the previous verse, Paul has used the illustration of marriage to illustrate that the law only has authority over a person while that person is alive. Now he goes on to make the important spiritual application.

At the cross, we have died to the law, who was our master. Now we are able to belong to Christ. Now it is Jesus who has authority over us, and we are able to bear fruit for him.

Remember: You belong to another.

Whenever we are tempted to sin, and whenever we stumble and fall, remember the words of Paul: “you belong to another.” No matter what the pull of your heart may be towards doubt, despair, and hopelessness; despite your feelings of unworthiness and shame, do not give in to the call of darkness. These are the voices of the enemy of your soul, trying to tell you that you could never belong to Christ, but that you belong to him.

When you are in these circumstances, look up, and say, no matter how feebly, “I belong to another. My life has been purchased by the precious blood of Christ. You have no right to my life.”

If you learn to take hold of this basic truth, you will get through the most difficult moments of your life. In Christ your redeemer you will find strength.

Spiritual Application

Are you going through a difficult time right now? Write yourself a little card that says, “I belong to Jesus.” Whenever you feel the pull toward doubt and despair, pull it out and remind yourself to whom you belong.
