1 Thessalonians 5:11
Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. (ESV)
I love this encouragement from Paul! That the thing he encourages them to do, he’s encouraged that they’re already doing. And so he says, “Do it more.”
What does he encourage them to do? He encourages them to encourage one another and to build one another up.
Now, the context is important here. The paragraph before this is all about being ready for the day of the Lord, when Jesus will return. And that will be a day of judgment. But Paul says to this church, it will also be a day of salvation for those who belong to Jesus, because he has died for us.
The encouragement earlier is to live in the light, to live a holy life, as one who now belongs to the day and belongs to Jesus. And so verse 11, when he says encourage one another and build one another up, surely the encouragement is in Jesus.
The encouragement is to keep being ready for the day of the Lord. The encouragement is to remember Jesus, and keep believing in him and his life and his death and his resurrection, and to build each other up as Christians, helping and spurring one another on to live differently as we prepare and are waiting for that day.
Hey friends, if you’re a follower of Jesus, keep going. Keep trusting in him, and keep giving yourself to encouraging others to keep trusting him, and building up those who also belong to Jesus.
And I love that idea that he knows they’re already doing this. And so let me encourage you, if you are making the most of opportunities to send a text message, to turn up to a Bible study, to be part of a faith community, to keep encouraging the people around you in Christ, well done. That text message is worth it. That coffee catchup is worth it. And so, keep going.
Keep pressing on, and keep doing that with others who also belong to Jesus.
