Verse of the Day John 15 12 with Dave Miers

John 15:12

This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. (ESV)

Jesus is speaking to his disciples. And he’s already said this a couple of chapters beforehand, that the distinguishing feature of his disciples is that they will be known for their love for one another.

And what does he say here in John 15:12 about what that love will look like?

As I have loved you.

The love that Christians have for one another is to be shaped like the love that God has for us in Christ Jesus.

Now, what does that look like? Well, you read on to verse 13, which says,

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.(ESV)

Jesus shows us just how costly and sacrificial and selfless love in the Christian community ought to be. He laid down his life for us. What an incredible act of love!

Brothers and sisters who belong to Jesus, that’s how we’re called to love one another. And the world will know that we belong to Jesus as they see that type of love.
