Unlimited: Glory in Service

Therefore I glory in Christ Jesus in my service to God (Rom. 15:17).

Our greatest glory is to follow Jesus. Jesus served the Father by serving others. Paul therefore glories in doing the same. For Paul, it isn’t heavy labour; for him, to serve his fellow human beings is to glory in Christ.

There is glory in service. It goes far beyond the sense of a job well done. Specifically, we walk in the glory of Jesus when we serve God.

The service of the priests in the Old Testament was filled with glory. The glory of the Lord filled the Most Holy Place, and sometimes it filled the entire temple. However, this glory was really only a shadow in comparison to the glory that was to come. In this way, our priestly service to God is filled with even greater glory: the glory of Jesus.

There is glory in service.

The apostle Paul wrote:

Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord” (1 Cor. 10:31.)

The word translated here to “boast” can equally be translated as “to glory.”  Specifically, what are we to boast, or glory, in? Paul wrote to the Galatians:

May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world (Gal. 6:14.)

Spiritual Application

Set aside some time this week to write your spiritual curriculum vitae or resume. Don’t include any of your school or academic qualifications or positions held. Include only what you have done to serve others for no reward in your life. Then take a look at what you have written. What do you think?
