Unlimited: Prophesying

If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith (Rom. 12:6b, NIV).)

The prophetic gift was undoubtedly an important gift in the apostolic church, and it should be an important one today.

Today we commonly associate the gift of prophecy with telling the future (“forth-telling.”) However, the essence of the gift isn’t “fore-telling,” but “forth-telling.” Prophecy is God giving a message to a person, who then communicates it for the benefit of others. That may or may not have to do with the future.

A clear example of this difference is John the Baptist, of whom Jesus said that he was,

…[much] more than a prophet (Matt. 11:9.)

…of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John.. (Luke 7:28)

The gift of prophesying must not be used to communicate anything that disagrees with the Christian faith.

Yet John the Baptist was never a prophet in the sense of prophesying about future events in the traditional sense. All he did was tell people to repent, and announce the coming Messiah.

A clearer translation of this part of Romans 12:6 is found in God’s Word translation, which renders it as:

…if speaking what God has revealed, make sure what you say agrees with the Christian faith.

It is very important to notice that the gift of prophecy must not be used to communicate anything that disagrees with the Christian faith. To do so is to use the gift falsely, and will lead people astray.

Spiritual Application

Have you ever known anyone who had the gift of prophecy? How did they use it? Did they speak everything in agreement with the Word of God or did they depart from it? Did they use the gift to glorify Jesus and him crucified, or was it to glorify self? Were they consumed with their own importance and the importance of their gift, or did they simply share what the Lord had revealed to them, with great humility?
